The Beguiling hasn't shared any upcoming events with us lately.
The Beguiling Books & Art is joining in for its first Authors for Indies Day on Saturday April 29th at the new shop location! Authors for Indies is an event where selected authors come hang out at independent book stores, and volunteer their time as store clerks, recommending great reads! We think The Beguiling is the first comics-focused bookstore to take part, and hopefully it’s something we’ll be able to do for years to come.
Brian McLachlan, 11am-3pm: Brian is the author of the young-person-oriented Draw Out The Story: Ten Secrets to Creating Your Own Comics, and What Noise Do I Make?, a children’s picture book, both published by Owlkids. Brian has a wide range of taste in comics, and is just as happy suggesting great graphic novels for grownups as he is some of the best comics out there for younger readers.
Claudio Ghirardo, 3pm-4pm: A graduate of the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon 19& Graphic Art, Inc., Claudio Ghirardo contributed to small press zines before focusing on freelance illustration and then being a full time artist. He has his own monthly experimental webcomic, “UNTITLED” where he combines modern art with sequential storytelling. He publishes his own graphic novels/zines, and has contributed to numerous anthologies.
Guest: Joe Ollmann
Join cartoonist Joe Ollmann at The Beguiling on Thursday January 26th at 7:00 PM as he discusses his latest graphic tour de force: The Abominable Mr. Seabrook.
In Seabrook, Ollmann chronicles the trials and tribulations of notorious journalist William Buehler Seabrook: famed member of the Lost Generation known for participating in voodoo ceremonies, riding camels cross the Sahara desert, communing with cannibals, and popularizing the term “zombie” in the West. Exposing both the highs and extreme lows of a turbulent life, Ollmann often weaves in Seabrook’s own words and those of his biographers. This biographical account, however, posits Seabrook the believer versus Seabrook the exploiter, leaving the reader to consider where one ends and the other begins.
The Beguiling is thrilled to welcome a special in-store signing featuring Brenden Fletcher and Cameron Stewart, 2/3rds of the team for the brand new Image Comics series MOTOR CRUSH! You may remember Brenden, Cameron, and artist Babs Tarr from their work on the acclaimed BATGIRL OF BURNSIDE relaunch for DC 52? Well they’re doing their own thing now and it’s going to be an amazing book, and we’re lucky enough to have Cameron and Brenden in-store on release day to sign the first issue!
The Beguiling will have a BUNCH of copies on hand of Motor Crush #1 for the signing, and Brenden and Cameron might just be bringing a special few items as well! It’s happening again! #ZDARSCON is the official comic book event of Chip Zdarsky, but this time he’s bringing some special pals to the event! You have no idea what to expect, even if you went last time, because this is nothing like last time or anytime for that matter.
Details will be announced in the #ZDARSCON tag on Twitter on Saturday morning (Follow @zdarsky @thebeguiling & #zdarscon on Twitter for deets), and on the Facebook event page.
#ZDARSCON is an experience. But, sadly, it will be an experience which lasts for roughly 5-10 minutes per person. Do not travel to Toronto JUST for #ZDARSCON. Just trust Chip on this one.
#ZDARSCON will be located within 5-10 minutes walking of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, where we presume nothing related is going on this weekend. Maybe the gift show? Anyway.
#ZDARSCON will announce the MYSTERY LOCATION the morning of! And the signing schedule the night before!
#ZDARSCON will have a selection of books and products from all participating creators available for purchase at the event itself, on the off chance you didn’t get up Saturday morning and lug a box of books downtown.
#ZDARSCON will be a very nice time.

Come see all three present from their new work and sign and hang out and all that fun stuff. It should be good times.
Cartoonist and Lightning Bolt drummer Chippendale’s debut with Drawn & Quarterly, Puke Force, is a dark and dense social satire that comments on social media narcissism, the malice of the right, and the hypocrisies of the left.
DeForge’s Big Kids is a coming-of-age tale about the transformative years of high school.
Drnaso’s Beverly delves into the barely repressed anxieties and obsessions of suburban teens.

Susceptible is the story of Goglu, a daydreamer growing up in Quebec in the ’80s and ’90s with a single mother. From a skillful artist comes a moving, beautiful story about families, loss, and growing up. Whether she’s discussing nature versus nurture or the story of her birth, Castrée imbues her storytelling with a quiet power and a confidence in the strength of imagery.
As you may remember, this book launch was originally scheduled for November, but we’re happy to be say it’s been rescheduled and Genevieve will be coming to town to celebrate its release and discuss this new work.
We think this is one of the most important graphic novel releases of the season, from an enormously talented young Canadian cartoonist. Best of all, we’ve been told her presentation from the book is excellent, so we hope you’ll be able to make it out for this.
