I'm in the process of sending the following note to retailers in the Fresh Comics database.
Dear Local Comic Book Retailer,
As 2012 winds down, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for being the foundation of the modern comic book community and for the time you put in each and every week to help customers like myself continue enjoy our time as comic book fans.
2012 was a significant year for our industry. We got to watch DC's New 52 reboot play out while Marvel followed in their footsteps with their NOW! initiative. We saw the surprising surge of independent publishers with Image leading the charge with books like "Saga" and "The Manhattan Projects". Comic book culture went mainstream in a way never seen before as "The Avengers" and "The Dark Knight Rises" broke box-office records. I can't think of a time in my life when it's been better to be a comic book fan.
2012 was also a big year for Fresh Comics. I pitched the app at my first convention when I exhibited at Chicago's C2E2 in March. This year saw the Fresh Comics audience grow many times over as new users found the app via their local mobile app stores and I relaunched the website to be a more visible entity on the open web. While my marquee feature is the list of new comic releases every week, I find that customers come to the website looking for more information about their local comic shops. The vast bulk of Fresh Comics web traffic comes from online searches for the hours or address for a local retailer.
My goal for 2013 is to work more closely with retailers like yourself to try to bring more customers into your shops. While Wednesday's new releases continue to be the main attraction for existing customers, I've been focusing my energy as of late mining Twitter streams for local events and expanding the Fresh Comics shop database. While we passed the 2,000 shop mark earlier this year, I'm certain that there are many more shops to add as well as current shops to keep updated as folks move locations and open new branches.
In the past, I tried to monetize Fresh Comics by charging shops for event listings. While that policy has gradually been changing, and I'm happy to make it official and announce that effective immediately, listing upcoming events for your shop is now 100% free.
In 2011, I built a leading database of new comic releases. In 2012, I compiled a leading database of local comic shops. In 2013, my goal is to build the canonical calendar of events happening in shops around the world. I want to do my part to get more customers into your shop to enjoy the local comic book culture.
If you are interested in helping me out, please don't be shy about subscribing email@example.com to any mailing lists that you may use to announce upcoming events. If you don't maintain a mailing list or use an alternative means of sharing events with your customers, please let me know where I should be looking for upcoming parties and signings. With your help, I'm looking forward to filling up my upcoming events list (http://freshcomics.us/events) and map (http://freshcomics.us/events/map).
Finally, in the interest of housekeeping, the link(s) below will take you to the information that I have currently have for your shop(s):
